Botulinum toxin is an exotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum type A. It works by blocking the release of the neurotransmitter responsible for muscle contraction. As a result, the targeted muscles relax, helping to reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles caused by repetitive facial expressions.
The toxin is injected directly into the muscle (intramuscular injection), where it temporarily reduces communication between the nerve and the muscle only in the treated area. Its effects are completely reversible, and the toxin is naturally metabolized and eliminated by the body over time.
The primary goal of treatment is to achieve a natural-looking result. It provides a more refreshed, rested, and youthful appearance while softening expression lines that can create a tired, angry, or sad look.
